I recently picked up a 12ga Husqvarna 103cs hammer gun choked xxf/xxf, and it puts both barrels exactly dead on to poa, from 20 yds to 40 yds. Loaded with 1 1/2oz. of nice shot, those xxf tubes put an incredibly lethal ink blot of shot on paper. I only mention this with regards to convergence issues. Some sxs's have problems with this, and some do not. If it were me in search of such a specialized tool, I wouldn't settle on any particular gun until I've had a chance to pattern it, regardless of how much it weighs.

Great info, Mark. And I am certainly well aware of the likely difficulties of barrel convergence, and only solved the problem with my cheap Yildiz by installing eccentric chokes. But the problem with buying another new gun is that nobody is gonna let me pattern it before buying. I was hoping that someone on here could tell me that X-gunmaker would make me a gun to my specifications. Apparently, such a guy doesn't exist.

>>>My SxS turkey gun is a Western Arms Long Range 16 ga. It has 30" barrels choked F&F. Patterns great with 1.25 ozs. of 6s. and Kent Matrix 6s if I hunt on Federal WPAs. I would think they are out there in 12s if one looks. Mine was in the 95+% condition and I paid $300 for it and wouldn't sell it for twice, awesome duck SxS with Kent Matrix.<<<

I haven't seen one of those; thanks for the info!

jOe,
With over 250 pellets in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards with the below 20 or 125 pellets in a .410 at 40 yards, it would be the cumulative effect of more than 1 pellet killing a turkey with a well-placed shot. And yes, .6 grains in a small pellet that does not deform as lead does makes the difference. Note that I weighed and measured 8s, not 9s. Ill have to scrounge up some lead 9s to make that comparison. It has been demonstrated by both gel tests and KPY ballistics software (sold by numerous sources) that 9 tungsten super shot penetrates 1.62 at 62 yards, slightly better than lead 4s at the same distance and velocity. I have read reports of large leg bones being shattered by the tungsten 9s. A buddy has killed 17 gobblers without a miss or wounded bird with the .410 load of tss 9s. The .410 load of 13/16 oz. contains 310 tungsten 9s. To get that shot count with lead 4s in a 12 gauge requires 2 oz. My .410 weighs 3 lbs, 9 oz. rigged out. My SBE rigged-out weighs over 8 lbs and Im selling it. I prefer carrying the lighter gun which has proven lethality on turkeys. You might get by with a bead on a shotgun, but my 65 year-old eyeballs cant, but I am no porch or decoy sitter nor do I hunt turkeys from a blind over feed plots. At my expense I will send either gun below with shells to your local FFL. Hunt one or the other on fall turkeys. I wont need them at that time. You say you dont criticize without trying something first. Now is your chance to do both. The 5 7/8 lb. 20 gauge cost $91 NIB and the 3 lb., 9 oz. .410 cost $129 NIB last summer. Far from perfect turkey guns with only one shot, not fancy for sure, but with crisp, light triggers and well-choked for the shot used. And I will try not to catch on fire so you dont have to make a split second decision whether or not to pee on my leg. wink Return them at the end of your fall season. You game?

No thanks....my W&C Scotts work just fine.

And they do it with class....

Both guns barrels are equally choked (the sidelock 12 is choked .035 the hammer 10 is choked a little less than .030) making them as close to the perfect turkey gun as you can get.

I just weighed two copper plated lead #4's they weighed 4.5 and 4.6 grains each. cool

Should my softer (and heavier crazy ) lead pellet connect with bone and deform so what.....to me means it's impacted all it's energy on the target.

The laws of physics and the Geneva Convention attest to the superiority of softer ammo to be more devastating on live game and warm bodies.

Geo, I've never heard anyone try to say that lead or the Extended Range that Joe shoots will not kill turkeys; of course it will. The "pixie dust" just gives you the chance to do some things that can't be done with lead, like turkey hunt with a .410 and make clean kills at 40 yds. In the end, its all just a hobby and trying new things is part of it to me. Beats playing golf. smile

One thing I'd point out is that shooting a turkey is different from most game animals. When shooting a turkey, I don't want to put even one shot into his body if I can help it. I want the load to hit him in his central nervous system, in other words, his head and neck, and punch holes thru it. The holes don't have to be big; they just need to go thru the CNS and you have a dead turkey. They don't have to expand or transfer energy - just punch a hole in him, and the more holes the better.

When shooting a deer or almost anything else, its totally different. You are taking body shots and you do want your pellets or bullet to expand or transfer the energy to the animal. This could start another big argument, but I deer hunt with a .308 and handloaded Nosler Ballistic Tips. Many folks hate them, but I have had only good results with them. They put gigantic holes in the deer and he is nearly always dead on the spot.

I did some testing with tss buckshot for the guy that sells it. I hadn't shot a deer in 30 years with buckshot, but I agreed to shoot one for him just to see how it performed. I think the load had about 40 pellets of 18g/cc shot in the 3" 12 gauge load. I shot a doe at 30 yds and it punched 40 little holes all the way thru her and dropped her on the spot. Still, I wasn't all that impressed with it. On a longer shot, I think you would get penetration, but maybe a poor blood trail if the deer wasn't hit solidly enough to anchor him there.

Other hunters have had good luck using the dense shot on ducks and geese. Again, its the penetration that usually brings them down, and from all I've read its much better than steel. I doubt its a lot better than lead for waterfowl, but lead is no longer legal. But for most, the tss is just too expensive for duck hunting.

My belief is that its an excellent shot for turkeys, but probably has few other practical uses. I hope this helps in satisfying your curiosity about it. If you wanta know more, go to the Gobbler Nation site and look in the handloading section. All sorts of info there.

Well, you guys have completely trashed my thread on finding the perfect turkey gun. smile

Joe, I'm gonna save that pic and use it in our battle to eliminate the fall season in AL. We almost had it eliminated, and then the henkillers managed to get 20 days put in for 5 counties. A massacre like that would not be legal in AL, but that sure doesn't stop many of them from doing it.
