You might want to look at the German SxS. A Merkel or Sauer. I have a Sauer 20 ga. with 26" barrels and if cut to 22" with choke inserts I expect it would weigh in the 5.5 lb. range. The only thing you have to manage with a Sauer is most have a cheek piece.

I am not stuck on an alloy receiver, I just didn't think it would be possible to get the weight down to 5 lbs without going that route. I really like your son's little gun, and please tell him I said congrats on the gobblers! But I don't think I could get used to the straight stock. I handle mine like a handgun a lot using the pistol grip, and I wouldn't want to get away from it.

Thanks again for the post!

I've never hunted turkeys and I know nothing about turkey hunting.
Please tell me why you need such a huge load for turkeys?
I thought that Turkey hunters did a lot of sitting and waiting for the bird to come to them, so why do you need such a light gun?
Aren't turkeys usually shot at close range?
Like I said I know nothing about turkey hunting.

BUSTED!!!

"BUSTED" laugh ...by the internet stalker.

Stan how can one comment on the use of something if they have never tried it ?

I got talked into using a scope for almost a whole spring season and I also shot Nitro 4x5x7 pixie dust shot for several years.

I live and learn.....sadly some never experience enough of anything to actually learn.

Most are shot at close range mostly because of terrain....

These #9 shot fairy dust shooters commonly brag about "80 yd kills" and some actually think they can kill them at a 100+ yards

I guess if you're a field sitter that thinks he's a turkey hunter safely tucked away in his out'e house turkey blind over a flirt of da'coys you might get buy shooting feminine guns with magic #9 size fairy dust for shot....

If you hunt Eastern wild turkeys 'Commando style' (no blinds or da'coys) in Eastern woods you will need all the advantage you can get.

In the spring I mostly shoot a 3 & 1/2" SBE stuffed with #4 Winchester tungsten alloy shot.

In the fall out of my W&C Scott SxS I shoot 2 & 3/4" #4 copper plated shot....If I hunt with my SBE either shoot 2 & 3/4" or 3" #4 or #5 shot.

Don't feel alone....lots of people kill them for years without ever knowing anything about turkey hunting.

He might need all the magnification he can get with those birds. Steve, good point about those Nitros. I recall one hunter who dissected a Nitro 4x5x7 load and found a high percentage of the shot in the shell was Pixie Dust 9's. (those 9's were 12 g/cc compared with our 18 g/cc 9s.) People who hunt turkeys from glass porches shouldn't shoot 9's out of an SBE with a Swarovski scope and criticize others who shoot tungsten 9's with red dots on their guns.
LOL

Sniffing that #9 fairy dust must have e'flickted your brain.

To put it clearly don't bother asking me again to help you find another English SxS.....

I doubt I'd pee down your leg if'n you were on fire. wink

Thanks for the idea, but I couldn't bear to cut up a fine gun like either of those. If I am gonna cut another one up, it would be a mid-range gun like the bottom of the line Fausti that was imported by Traditions.

All good questions, and Joe has answered it very well. You can certainly get by with a lighter load; the heavy load just allows me to have a wider pattern that is still dense enough to kill the turkey out to 50 yds without any concern. I shoot a 2 oz load in the 12 gauge; some people shoot 2.25 oz and a few even heavier. Gil is hammering them with a 13/16 load in his .410. Using the heavy load allows me to still have 12 gauge performance in a light 20 gauge gun. There are some folks using a 1 and 7/8 oz recipe, but I have settled on the 1.75 with either 8s or 9s.

I don't do a lot of sitting in turkey hunting in the southeast. I hunt all day, and its not uncommon to walk 5 miles or more in a day's hunt. And if I get on a turkey, I have to keep the gun pointed in his direction while calling to him - you have to be ready to shoot when he appears. It is much nicer doing all this with a 5 lb gun than an 8 lb gun.

As far as range, I've shot turkeys this spring at 38, 30, 25, 45, 38, 25, 27, and 41 yards. Some people want them to get closer, but I had rather go ahead and shoot him at the first available shot that I am 100% sure I can make.

I hope that explains it a little better.

Thanks to all for the replies.

Coosa, have you ever come across Bretton shotguns? The 12 bore over/under with double triggers weighs less than 5 1/2 pounds. Multi choke too! 2 3/4" chambers. Odd little guns with barrels that screw into the action so that you can also get rifle tubes as well as smooth. Not at all expensive. I have one in 12 bore but don't like the idea of firing heavy loads. Not something you seem to mind reading your post. Just the odd shot should be o.k. though. Have a look at this: http://www.bretton-gaucher.com/anglais/f_pres.htm Might fit the bill. Lagopus.....
