I'm having a problem identifying an old black powder rifle cartridge.
It's head stamped V C 1886 This is a rimmed case 57mm long with an overall length of 75mm. It is a rimmed bottleneck with a paper patched bullet diameter of 11mm.
It may in fact be a 43 Spanish (Rolling block) round but I'm not sure.
Can someone id it?
Jim

Can you provide the rim diameter base and neck sizes? In decimals?

Here you go:

Rim diameter: .61" 16mm
Base diameter: .55" 13.5mm
Neck diameter: .465" 11.6mm

italiansxs,
Check:11.15 Werndl M77.,you didn't say if the cartridge has a mauser Base(A Base).
Also check the 11mm French Gras.
Both these cartridges have cases longer than 57mm but that includes the rim thickness and I could not tell if your measurement did.

My measurments included the rim. The rim itself is strange as you'll see. I'll take some pictures and post them.
Note: On the overall measurement I didn't measure the protruding part of the rim that houses the primer.

.43 Mauser - base .516, rim .586, length 2.37, bul dia .446
.43 Spanish - base .522, rim .629, length 2.25, same.
.348 Win. - base .553, rim .610, length 2.25 the rim & base
are almost a perfect match, some sort of wildcat perhaps?

The base/head looks like a 43 Mauser, but the #s don't match.

I'd go with one of the variants of the 43 Mauser!

This is getting interesting. I thought there would be a straightforward answer right off on this. There are 4 of these cartridges in a bunch of obsolete ammo I bought awhile back. I have been trying to build my own reference library of obsolete big bore cartridges.
I will agree at this point that it looks like the images I can find of a 43 Mauser.
