1. 7x57R
2. Is it OK to shoot modern 2-3/4" 16 gauge shot shells? Not until you get the chambers measured as you have not shown
the shotgun barrel proof marks yet. I would shoot
2 1/2 inch ammo, either RST or reloads.
But is this risky? Well pressures will go up if you have a short
chamber. Some say yes, some say no risk. but for a couple of $
why bother??

3. Gun apprears original, rifle barrel not rechambered
Shotgun chamber needs measuring

4. Factory original as far as the gun goes. Scope has been added.

5. Scope is era correct and FANTASTIC. Scope not done at the gun factory but may have been added by dealer BEFORE original purchase.

Gunwolf I have not heard from Merkel yet. I will let you know if they reply and what they offered in the way of information. skeettx thank you for the wonderful information. It is very helpful. I will see you in Amarillo soon! This 7x57R will be great for those prairie dogs up your way, right? ;-) (But I am not yet retired so...looking for a break in the daily drudge!)

BTW, looks like the model is 210E.

As for the G with crown above: it's the proof stamp for "Gezogene Läufe" means rifled barrel!

Negative on that, Gunwolf - Crown over G is for Geschoss, or solid projectile. Most tubes stamped with a Crown over G are rifled but it just notes that the tube experienced proof with a solid projectile.

Under the line it means the same....!
In "gezogenen Läufen" only bullets are fired. On the other hand, you can shoot slugs in a gun and this is a Geschoss or bullet too! But believe me, in german gezogener Lauf means only bullets are fired out of it! I have all german proof stamps her in the book of G.Wirnsberger, the Gun proof stamps "bible" and he say: Gezogene Läufe. I'm sorry, but I am too dull to get pics of this into my post... :-((

Yes, maybe semantics, but if you purchased a tube that is smoothbore and wears the "Crown" over "G" you would not want to be lead to think that the rifling had been removed. The Austrians used a solid projectile in proof for both tubes intended to be rifles and shotguns. The term rifling was never associated with the "Crown" over "G".

Well, we speak about german proof stamps which are the following:

(always with crown) G= Gezogener Lauf (rifled) , S = Glatter Lauf (smooth), W = Würgebohrung (choked), S with W inside= gezogene Würgebohrungsläufe (rifled ! chokes) the letter must be proofed with a solid projectile!!! I think, that's what you mean on the austrian guns. After regarding this, you never will find a smoothbore tube with a crown over G..... (Do you know one?)

Wolfgang

Well, still wrong on 3 accounts:

G - solid projectile

S - Schrot

Yes, you will find a small calibre smoothbore with a Crown over G.
