That worked both ways. My first Newton had a Springfield barrel screwed into it and was caliber .30-'06. I went to the trouble to have reamers made for the .256 Newton cartridge so I could return the rifle to the original Newton caliber. It shoots like a house afire.

My most recent Newton is a Model 1922, and the barrel, which I assume was .256 Newton, had been replaced with a .270 Winchester barrel by the Niedner Rifle Company. I assumed that the owner replaced it because production of factory ammunition had ceased and the "new" .270 came close to the .256's performance.

Twelve years ago, I lightened my load of forty plus Newton rifles but kept two, #27X Alaskan moose-getter with fancy wood and all the options. The other I call my "romance rifle". It has all the options and engraving on the floorplate signifying that it was a gift from a wife to her husband Christmas 1919.

OT,but has anyone actually seen an original Newton in .40 Newton? I used to have a loading tool by Newton for one but have never heard of an actual rifle extant.

A bit of a coincidence perhaps, but I was just perusing the local classified rag that comes out once a week, and saw a 35 Newton for sale, entered the DGS site and see that there is a conversation going on about the Newton rifles. I watch these firearm adds religiously and don't think I've ever seen a Newton for sale before. The classified says it has a "scope mount" and a "forward set trigger"

As far as adding something to this conversation about Newton rifles, I have nothing!

I have a Buffalo Newton with segmental rifling in .30-06. The DST, which I really like, is the rifle's only redeeming feature.
