Sorry don't post much here but read the site all the time. This is the first time I have posted pictures to any forum so I hope they work. I am considering purchasing this gun and am wonder about any info and what a fair price might be. I have read the Smith collector site and have gained a lot of info from there. I know it is hard to be accurate without holding the gun but hope someone can give me their thoughts. It's a 1909 Grade 4 LC Smith in 20 gauge with a semi pistol grip. It appears to be "as new" and is said to be unfired, obviously this is pretty hard to confirm. The gun appears unaltered and as they say "as new". If anyone can give me an opinion I would really appreciate it.
Thanks, Bob Warren

If this in fact is an "as new" 1909 L C Smith it would be quite a find. I'll let others more knowledgeable about this brand comment. However; Can you provide any documentation/provenance and the reason given this gun remained in as new condition for all this time?

Bob, a very nice and rare gun in a 20 ga. There were only 15 made in 20 gauge. The barrels should say Nitro Steel on the bottom where they mate up to the water table. The case colors look right and so does the wood. The checkering on the for-end did cover most of it and looks right.
The Grade 4 was only made until 1912 and was discontinued. The 20 gauge guns only came with steel barrels, but not to say that they could not be ordered with Damascus.
In 1904 it was priced at $165 with ejectors, of which this one does not have. They were a $15.00 option then.

As to value, if deemed original could bring as much as $10,000 at an auction.

Does it strike anyone as odd that a gun of such high grade would have no matting on the top rib? The gold bar inlay would be correct, but no matting?
I suppose it would be an option, just not one that I've ever seen before.

That gun appears right as rain. If it is what it is, it's an extremely rare and desirable piece.

I can think of two big-time gun dealers who would not hesitate to put that gun up for sale at $20,000, perhaps even more. As I've always said, "go try to find another one just like it."

That gun is a candidate for a research letter if there ever was one! John Liles raises a very valid question--- in addition the gold rib inlay has no "dressing", and the script on the top rib IMHO doesn't look quite right. My guess is a new top rib. Another thing just caught my eye---- the screw in the triggerguard isn't blued.
BTW, research letters on pre-13 guns commonly do not contain much information.
I'd love to see more and better pics and being the skeptic I am I'm betting on a nice refinish. I have a 5E that I know was recased by Marlin in the 50's that has identical case colors.

As new and original or re-done it is still a fantastic gun and would bet draw big money at auction.

Usually when an LC has CCH on the forend iron, but "does not" have ejectors, it is a re-case....

Best,
