bobk,
What I would do is soak the stock overnight in acetone, the acetone bath will remove the old finish, much of the oil staining and probably disolve the glued repair as well. Then I would take it out from the acetone, let it dry for a few days, then reglue with epoxy, wrapping the joint with latex surgical tubing or an old bicycle innertube to put pressure on it while the glue drys. Finally I would drill two thin holes down through the top of the stock inside the tang channel, spread epoxy down into the holes and finally screw two fine-threaded stainless steel bolts down the holes so that they interesect the former crack. However, before I installed the two bolts I'd measure how far I wanted them to go and then notch the shafts of the bolts with a file so that after I screwed them in place I could break them off just below the level of the wood in the tang channel.
That's just what I'd do, you can do as you see fit.
Steve

Here is my almost finished stock which I hope someday will be finished.

Bobk, your original stock needs a lot of work before it could be used as a pattern for a duplicator machine. You would need to soak it as Rockdoc suggests and then use bondo to fill gaps between wood and metal (being sure to use plenty of release agent) and to add "wood" where needed to strengthen the stock.

I suggest you contact Sandy McDonald in Yakima, WA. (contact info available on www.acgg.org) or some other stockmaker/duplicator and get their advice on what to do to make your old stock usable as a pattern. There is a lot to it.

Nice looking stock. The wood grain looks to flow perfect through the wrist. You should make several stocks with wood like this, so I can have one.

bobk,
I can understand you wanting to restock it but it might be a good idea to repair it first, since it's an easy repair and costs very little. After repairing it you can then shoot it for a while and decide if you still like it well enough to go through the work and cost of a restock.

I repaired a stock with the top broken off like your's. I chose to use wooden dowels inside with no outside holes to plug.

Take a tiny piece of lipstick about a #8 shot size and place on the break on each side of the upper tang where you want the dowels to go. Carefully fit the piece back on the stock. This will tell you where to drill holes for the dowels. I used a 1/8" drill first for a pilot.

I used 1/4" dowels with holes drilled with a 3/8" drill just deep enough on opposing sides of the break without going all the way through. The 1/8" oversize will give wiggle room when fitting the dowels back in and placing broken off piece on the stock (dry fit test first) after putting Acraglass in the holes about half filled and a thin layer of glass on the broken surface area, but staying about 1/8" away from the outer edges so too much doesn't squeeze out.

Then do as was suggested with surgical tubing. JMO
