Sorry, JL, this one is a bit too new for my system. I'll have to leave it to the more modern guys.

If you could buy this at the 'Started at' price, it would be a excellent buy. I have seen this type of Merkel range from $4000 to $5500, the makers case and apparent condition certainly adds to the deal. But when all is said and done I think the $2995 starting price will be greatly exceeded.
The case colors wear much more quickly at the balance carry point, not enough clear photos of this area to be definitive, but the case colors are in very good condition.
IMHO

I picked up a nice 1620EL last summer at an auction( SG DT),they are nice guns, mine is a hair over 6lbs.You will like it when you get one.
Price is hard to say for that one,its the standard engraving and wood(not E or L),its does have the more desirable configuration SG DT,the ST ones (and PG) seem to take a big hit in price-I would stay away from them.
Mine has the same case-Emmbi,they don't come with them any more or so I have been told

Agree it's a very good buy at the opening price, and it's one of the earlier guns. As Dave K pointed out, later on, that nice hard case wasn't part of the package.
On a relatively common gun like this, when you want to do a price check, best place to go is gunsinternational. Mostly dealers listing there, but you can get a good idea of asking prices.

It is a true bargain at that price. These are superb guns - mine has become my favorite grouse gun. It has the "it" factor in spades. My new 1620 EL cost about 6K a few years ago.
I wouldn't quibble with the case color - it looks nice and that's what matters - the gun will delight you.

Did a bit of research and not sure that such a great deal-do a search for completed auctions for instance. One thing I don't like is the pad is not what came with it I bet,the buttplate with the engraved screws looks much better.

Some people don't care much for pads. Me, if it's a well-done pad and especially if it replaces just a plastic buttplate, no big deal. Might even fit better. If it replaces something like the skeleton buttplate on a Parker Repro, different story.
