You need the barrel band or screw into the barrel via a block or just tap the barrel for it. I've had them both ways and no problems. The krag I'm using now has a band, it also holds the sling, everything is tight at the band. Not a target rifle and works fine. MP Sadly Deceased as of 2/17/2014
