Arrieta Shotguns. Big Changes to Come. As many of you know I have been importing the fine line of the Arrieta guns since the late 80s. In fact, I am the oldest importer.
I have now been imformed that like Grulla and Garbi, they will drop the model 557 & 570. These are their lower priced models. The 557 is the entry level. Therefore the entry level gun will be close to $8000.

That is really too bad. They apparently are being discontinued because they can't make a profit on these hand-engraved offerings. I would rather have seen them raise the price of these models or switch to mechanical engraving in these patterns to provide them with an acceptable profit margin.
In addition, I can't believe that this would be good news for the dealers as there probably is a much larger pool of potential buyers at the $5K to $7K price point than at the $8K and up level.

With an entry price that high, they will disappear as gunmakers.

This presents Uggie with an interesting opportunity, as well as perhaps the Turkish makers.
The reality is that even at $8k there are not many options for hand made, engraved bespoke sidelock sxs. Only AyA offers anything in that price range (the Model 53 is around $8k). Grulla and Garbi start at over $10k.
I think the harder sell is the "mid-range" guns in the $12-$20k range - there is a lot of competition there from new and vintage guns. $15k would buy a pretty nice vintage "second tier" Brit gun like Westley Richards, WC Scott, Dickson, or Wilkes, not to mention a Lindner or Francotte.
Such a long, long time to be gone, and a short time to be there.

Maybe they don't have the bent towards technology and manufacturing efficiency to compete in the "entry" market. Focus on smaller volume / higher margin guns might be their best way to compete with their kind of gunmaking skills.

Any more info regarding Arrieta's relationship with Arrizabalaga?

The older guns cannot shoot steel. And as steel gets supposedly better and better with Tungsten getting more and more expensive they may have something there.

The 557 is not hand engraved as you would normally think of hand engraving, but nothing more than a pattern of small circles done with a hammer and punch. JR

Garbi dropped the Model 100 years ago. A shame since I beleive it the best entry level pf all the Spanish makers. With prices going for the guns as is they will soon price themselfs out of the market. For what you pay for a high end Spanish gun you can afford an English sidelock. I guess AYA is jumping for joy!
