Yeah I read this all the time, but since I don't have any around my house I just use the nearest old candle. Never had a problem determining the proper cartridge.

I lightly oil the chamber and have never experienced any wax sticking.

pooch, after probably about 1900 nearly all drillings were proofed for nitro loads. I don't know for certain but I would bet after 1910 all of them were nitro proofed. There are those on the board who will know precisely.

What is the most common nitro round used in drillings? The drillings I've looked at I couldn't find the caliber or type of cartridge to use. Is it usually stamped some where?

Prewar: 8x57IR
postwar: 7x57R, also 7x65R and 8x57IRS
This is my impression only.
On post war specimens caliber stamping is clear, on pre war drillings, especially turn of the century, it is not so clear and a chamber cast might be in order.

Let's say you have an old drilling and you need to make a casting to determine the cartridge size. Where do you go from there? The only books with specifications I know of are for nitro cartridges. Did any of the black powder cartridges have shoulders on them? Measuring shoulder angle and length off a wax casting looks pretty difficult. There are black powder cartridges that became nitro cartridges. Knowing which to use must be difficult. More info please. Thanks

So with barrel markings
Bore diameter
Chamber Cast
Cartridge length
and maybe a case in the gun trap
Lots can be done to discover the proper
cartridge for any gun.
If you have a gun that needs cartridge identification
take a road trip and come up here and we will do that
and I just may have the dies needed to make some ammo.
