Drillings have always fascinated me, but at this point in my life I don't want to take on another complicated and expensive hobby. I don't see myself owning a drilling, just admiring them. I just want to watch and maybe bug you guys with questions if you'll put up with me.

Jani, 9.3 X 72R would surely have to be among the most popular, no? One sure sees a lot of them for sale.
Come on pooch, where's your spirit of adventure?!?!?

I too am ready to take the drilling plunge. I'm looking at a between the wars 16x16x 9.3x65 Collath. No ammo available now, hasn't been made since 1930 according to the european books. It has a tapered case and a small neck indent. I have a detailed measurement drawing and photo of the round from a Spanish source. The bullet is supposed to be .366" diam.I checked with the guy in Alaska about an insert but it can only be done for a conversion to 9.2 makaroff(a pistol round). Can't find any brass. Is this a hopeless exercise? I know nothing about drillings but I'm interested in a deer/grouse tool.

Ford should be along shortly to describe a method to cobble up some ammo. I don't think it was fully based on the 0.360" BPE as there is a difference in the base with 11.00mm on the 360 and 11.35mm on the Collath along with a slight neck. Close though.
Kind Regards,

I've got the address of a guy at my house that will make any rifle brass you can think of, or so he says. He's done some for me and the quality is very good. I'll post when I get home.

Thanks guys. The guy in Alaska was in Ankorage and says he makes bullets too. Maybe the same guy? MCA Sports.I also learned some Collath 16 ga guns might have a tapered chamber that will only fit tapered shells(of their make, I assume). Anyone know if this is true?

omr, do I understand correctly that you are looking at this drilling and have not purchased it yet?
Barnes lists the dimensions of the 9.3 X 65R Collath and I haven't done a close comparison to all possible cases but I would bet there is something out there that can be made to work. It will depend upon how much time and effort you want to put into it.

sharps4590, Yes of course 9.3x72R is a very common old drilling cartridge - maybe the most common of them all. But the question was about Nitro rounds so I eliminated cartridges that originated as black powder rounds. I should probably also mention the most common drilling smoothbore chamberings. These are 16/65 for prewar guns and 16/70 for the postwar period.
With kind regards, Jani

Good info on chamber castings, but what is meant: sluging the bore? why do you do it and how. That shouldn't give you the length of the bullet. Where do you go for the info obtained after slugging, Cartridges of the World?
