I concur with the view that before restoration should be considered that the gun be as cleaned up as much as possible.
It is regretble some make comments that add nothing positive to the conversation.
Reference the original finish I cannot say for sure and leave it to others who know more of daily's than I.
I can say that the number of people who can be trusted to properly redo the damascus and case headening are limited (though there are more today than there used to be)
Once you have it cleaned up consider sending it to Keith Kearcher for evaluation

I notice that the gun has the "splattered white paint malady" that occurs on just about ever klunker I buy. I've yet to figure that one out. I think it comes from them being leaning in the corner when the ceiling is painting and no one caring enough to cover them up or moving them. I have an old Mauser that had Green Paint splattered on it.

Don't know how far you are from Claremont, NH, but New England Custom Gun would be a good choice to clean and assess your gun.
