Hi everyone, been cleaning up a forend with what I presume is a horn insert at the tip. Had to use a gentle varnish stripper to remove some horrible thick varnish that looked like it had been painted on with a dogs tail, I was careful to avoid getting any on the horn or whatever it is but when it was time to clean the 110+ yrs worth of oil, grease, and farmers finger dirt from the checkering I got busy with a fine brass brush and surgical spirit, with the tip at the top I could avoid getting any spirit on it but wondered, other than maybe loosening the glue it's fixed with, could spirit or meths harm the material ?
It's something that's never crossed my mind until now.
Thanks in advance for any answers.
Nick

Unless its been re fitted it will have been put in with bone glue meths should not affect it but with anything old like this things happen . If it dose come out its not a big job to scrape all the old glue out and re fix it with an epoxy .

Thanks gunman,it's fixed well, shouldn't think it'll come loose. I suppose horn is quite durable, was worried the solvent may damage it, just another of those softly softly jobs eh.
