Thank you I have a copy of Tony's book and it is a great inspiration. However that man had more talent than I do. I appreciate a tig will get the trigger guard back in order but I am concerned about discolouring. I have a good stock maker/repairer here in Calgary and tomorrow I will know if the stock is salvageable. I know my man cannot inlet a sidelock.
Known history of the gun is that it was a mantle piece for many years on a Saskatchewan farm. Places in Saskatchewan were home to English aristocrats second sons. One town I lived in 'Grenfell' was named after Sir Grenfell and in the 20's they chased fox on horses. I have a suspicion the gun came over with them. It was purchased in an auction when the farm was sold. I have a few hundred into this project and can certainly spend more if it is worthwhile. I have no sentiment in the project just the excitement of re-creation.
Now next question. Choke the tubes or use the mono-block and re-build? Again who is the man to do this?

I can't believe jOe hasn't been along to give you his "honest" opinion yet. I almost feel let down. I would think if most of the wood is there some of the stock magicians that we have here could fix it, and Mark Larson could cover the damage. CHAZ

Repair stock to use as a master and this includes glass bedding to get perfect fit to the metal and then have someone with a Hoenig pantograph make you a new one with some wood left for changes in fit to shooter.Hoening pantographs will give you a very close fit without a lot of hours invested and then a good man can fit it up for a lot less than a from the blank restocking by hand alone.

I would not want that stock repaired, IF it can be done.
New stock, repair guard, everything put right and proper-$4000 min.
Be careful. JR

Repair the stock by all means ,but please check you personal accident and injury policy first . I paid 20 for a gun in similar condition in the early 80's . Restocked and forended reproofed and rehardened after some damage to the engraving had been repaired . Can not remember the total cost but I did sell it at a very small profit . Took a while but the end result was worth it . All comes down to how much you want to spend .

There was a show on NatGeo where they were documenting the alarming rate of lions preying on humans in remote African villages. They interviewed an older gentlemen that shot a lion that had killed and eaten several farmers but during the interview he was holding a double barrel that he used to kill the lion that could have been this one's twin.

This is more in line with what I was thinking. However I don't know what a Hoenig pantograph machine is or who has one and can copy my stock. Any leads would be grateful.

Ok, here goes. Restocking your project will run about $5000 (with nice wood). The welding will cost you about $100. I suggest you do not have someone not familiar with guns do the welding. You will need to have the back hand pin hole redone as well to make it correct. The choke tubes from Briley have been running about $450 with shipping (unless they raised their prices for 2013.) Charles Lee is one of the best for pick up engraving being an Ariticled Purdey trained engraver....$750-$2000 you will have to talk to him.
As for fixing the gunstock....refinish, repair, and rechecker will cost about $1200. I have looked at all of the pictures and have guestimated there are about 45 hours of work that needs to be done in order to make it right. The stock has seen some rough times. It can be done.
