The pits were caused by the corrosive powder in the primers, some to the black powder and the rest to moisture, and the biggest of not being cleaned after shooting.
With the chemicals used today for cleaning bores, I would say the pitting is arrested as there is no moisture or other agent to further cause the pitting to continue.

If the corroded metal is removed from the pit, fully removed, and the metal is kept protected, there will be no further deepening or widening of the pit. If corroced metal is left in the pit, it becomes a trap for moisture and any corrosive material left in during cleaning. Modern cleaning chemicals, as mentioned above, make clearing pits to the sides and bottom much easier than in older times.

Was polishing out the pit how the corroded metal was removed on the past?

Rockdoc,
The "billions of pits" in the surface of rustblued barrels, are the result of the bluing solution. The rusting is killed by boiling and the color is changed to black at the same time.It is actually these pits that give rustblue it's famed wear resistance( wear would have to reach the bottom of the pits). This "pitting"("biting")is also the reason that polishing with finer than worn 320 grit abrasive is futile.

Der Ami,
Not joking here, but as boiling in water kills rust, would anything be gained in a pitted bbl by a few boiling water bath/bore brush in a drill cycles?
The pits would be blued then perhaps?
Just wondered if the boiling thing is ever done to arrest inside bbl rust?
