With reference to skeettx suggestion to try a 9.3x72R cartridge. This is a good suggestion, but,if a 9.3x72R norm.doesn't chamber: it could still be 9.3x72R,but a different version. If a 9.3x72R doesn't chamber, make a chamber cast, which will ID the chamber.BTY the 118,35 marking would be pre 1911/12 and afterward the bore marking would be in mm, and 8.8mm is a common mark for the 9.3 cartridges. Mr. Hallquist: Really need a length to determine the 9.3mm cartridge/maybe X72R. Crown over W denotes choke or constriction greater than 0.2mm I believe Crown over S - for shot Crown over U - denotes inspection Crown over N with load data is a voluntary semi-smokeless proof and not the subsequent Nitro proof W - probably last initial of the barrel maker BG, are you positive it is BG - he would have been the tube knitter I think the 29 is actually 2g(grams) so it would be 2 grams of Schultz powder & for the moment I can't recall with the N/A stamp to be for the shot tubes only, the rifled tube would have been black powder only 27g Blei is 27 grams of lead shot How long is the cartridge casing?
Hi Daryl The 16 Gauge cartridge case is 2 ˝ inch (63.50mm). The rifle barrel has a slightly tapered smooth channel from approx 10mm to 9.8 To where the riffling screw pattern starts, length is 87mm from ejector face (Closed), to start of screw pattern. Best wishes from Harry

With 87mm it must be the 9.3X82R. Might be a 9.3X82 Nimrod?
Kind Regards,

Hi Raimey
Thanks for the info. Thanks for the info. My next step would be to obtain some Dummy samples of the rounds to try in the chamber I presume, Or would it be best to offer to a reputable gunsmith to ascertain, and have the rifle tried and proofed in the UK, to obtain the correct caliber to offer the registration authorities when registering the weapon, This gun has been handed down to me by a close friend, (Now deceased)

The 87mm seems to include the "throat"area.A chamber cast would likely show case length. In addition to 9.3x72R and 9.3x82R Nimrod, there are a couple other cartridges it could be chambered for,all of which can be loaded for. Mike

Like Ford notes, I'd make a wax chamber cast which will reveal the demon.
Kind Regards,
