Chopperlump has another active post that got me thinking, but I didn't want to hijack his string with my own question. In it he says, "I have a pair of Nitro Specials that I have enjoyed for years. Not fancy, but great shooters with handling that beats the 311's." That got me thinking again about acquiring a "working man's" or "hardware store" gun, or perhaps several ... maybe even the same gun in three gauges. I'm getting excited already! But I know little about these guns. Stevens, Savage Fox, (Ithaca) Lefever Nitro Special, etc. -- which make and model is the cream of the crop, based on factors like strength, weight, handling and finish? I realize there will be many opinions here, but thought some consensus could be found. Thanks in advance for your thoughts! TT

A Philly Fox Sterlingworth 12g., this is the workingman's bore size. Anything under 12 is too uppity.

I tink it would be a set of Hunter Specials or Fultons, second choice would be Nitro Specials.. MDC

Horse hockey! Tell that to all those ole farmers and rural folks who had/have a 16 gauge double stuck behind the door!

I don't know about the rest of the country, but the 16ga was always "Very Highly Esteemed" in Southern "Bird Hunting" fields. In the South when you go after "Birds" it's the BobWhite, anything else is specified by name as duck hunting, dove shooting etc, but Birds are Quail.

Opinion and perception; both very interesting.

After years of shooting the quintessential hardware store guns - a "set" of Stevens 5100's (16ga, 20ga and .410) and a 12ga Fox Model B - I finally upgraded my cabinet to include Sterlingworths in 20 and 16ga, and thought I'd arrived!

But my best guns are botton of the barrel (excuse the pun) to some folks. Opinion and perception...

We're having fun here, of course. Just notions and opinions. I'm chiming in because it may mark the first time that I agree as much as one can on gun, gauge and class---with Lowell.

Yep: I shot a 12 ga Phily Sterlingworth all the years I was working. Now I'm shooting a W.C. Scott best quality SLE. I guess this is the Retired Man's Gun!!
