2-piper, what make and model is your .45 cal long rifle? Is it in line or side lock percussion? On my TC Renegade I blamed the small hole in the nipple as well as the weaker #11 caps.

We were shooting homemade no#6 lead but we are switching to bismuth No #4 for the next load. Knocking them down over decoys was not a problem we just never knocked down any stone dead. I shot no 6 federal premium 2 3/4 mag's in the 80's and it was awsome I would like to match that with the black powder or come close to it.I think it is going to take #4 shot. I had a guy at a trap shoot say he had a 3 inch W.C.Scott Hammer gun that I'll have to check on.I never have heard of a 3 inch Hammer gun much less an early english. I know a 10 guage coud put out the lead.

J R B Make is mine. Its strictly a round ball gun. Made it about 1970 on a douglas 66" twist bbl. Bought the brass cast triggerguard & buttplate & a steel cast hammer & made everthing else from scratch. Curly maple stock was just a blank. It was intended as a flint but I never got it sparking right so switched to caplock. It was semi-based on a Lancaster Co Pa rifle. I kept the full length (43") of the Douglas bbl.

Miller,
If it was a 60's or early'70s era XX Douglas barrel, it's most likely a good 'un! Got two of those myself on buffalo rifles. I built one for competition in the cross-sticks matches. Most accurate roundball rifle I ever saw anywhere, including the Nationals at Friendship. I have 5/8" five shot groups I shot with mine at 100 yds. Yep, patched round ball.
I'm still using up a bunch of old Elephant brand BP in my shotgun. Dirty burning stuff, compared to Goex or Wano. Don't use it in rifles anymore.
Lead's legal for muzzleloaders in Mississippi for ducks ?

Lead's legal for muzzleloaders in Mississippi for ducks ? I don't know. I thought lead was illegal for all waterfowl in all states by Federal Regulations, which last count I had included Mississippi

We looked for signs everwhere that said it was not legal to shoot lead and did not find one. But as I said we are switching to Bismuth no #4 just in case. I ordered it today. $156 plus shipping for 6 lbs. I am not sure how many shells it will load but it does not look like many.

I'd redact all the lead/Pb comments. Loading 1oz loads from 6lbs will get you 96 loading. So it will get you a few.
