Steve maybe PeteM will pop in with a more detailed answer but in Europe (Germany?) some proof bureaucrat decided to call .410 36 gauge and make it the official designation and to stamp it on barrel flats. Four-ten is most certainly 67 gauge if you do the math.

So it is proper to call .410 36 gauge even though it is not really.
