IT'S NOTHING NEW, IT'S CALLED SALES & MARKETING....SELL THEM WHAT'S NEW AND WHAT YOU MAKE THE MOST PROFIT ON.....Same reason cars, clothes and other consumer goods change styles often....."New is hot, Old is not"....especially to the young.....

American gunners love affair with repeating firearms started during the Civil War or as you southern boys refer to it The War of Northern Aggression with the Volcanic Arms the Winchester 66 and others. The concept was then applied to shotguns and was purely and simply more firepower for whatever real of perceived purpose the gunner had. Winchester started driving the nails in the coffin of the break open shotgun with the Model 97. From a practical standpoint it is hard to dispute the advantages of the repeater but who is practical when the aesthetics of the double gun are so superior.

Aren't double guns repeaters that took over for single shots. Maybe the single barrel repeaters were a better fit for machine manufacturing.

I stopped wondering 'why repeater' after I read an article about a hunting championship that the article claimed is held every year in Spain. Partridge and rabbits over bird dogs, who gets more in a day wins. All top three guys had german shorthairs and Benelli semis. There were other breeds within top ten, and a couple of Berettas - but not a single doublegun.
The only way to outshoot a guy with a repeater, all things being equal, is to have a pair with a loader, Brit style.

It was never a "Civil War", an act of Congress (as I rcall was in the 1920s) declared the official name to be "The War Between the States". Since "The WaH" ended in 1865 of course the Win 66 had no part of it, nor did the Volcanic have much impact. The Henry (successor to the Volcanic) & the Spencer were the two repeaters which saw much use during this Late Unpleasantness. At the Batle of Hoover's Gap in middle TN, about 50 miles from where I live was fought the first battle in which an entire Battalion was equipped with repeating rifles. Col Wilder, the Battalion Commander under General Rosecrans who had personally signed for every man in his battalion to purchase their Spencer, took in an afternoon "The Gap" which Rosecrans had hoped they would be able to accomplish in 3 days. My ancestors & relatives who were there were on the receiving end, not the firing end of those Spencers. There are tales from my family from a little further south where some minor fighting took place in an area known as Liberty Gap of some of my ancestors crawling under their bed & listening to the bullets flying around, & through, their house above them. Primary ancestors of mine who lived & some fought, in this area were Elams, Hoovers, Edwards, Millers, Binghams & Fulkses

A good bit of early hype for the Remington Autoloading Shotgun, introduced during 1905, was the fact the J.J. Blanks won the Grand American Handicap of 1907 with the RAS --

The 71st Illinois with Henry .44 caliber rimfire rifles. Most Illinois units were equipped with lever actions.  Pete
