No, the last photobucket picture was not showing because of over limit, so I just posted it,
I can find no reference to this gun, is it sidelock or sideplate?
Looks sidelock to me, but who knows

skeet, I'm a newbie to fancy shotguns. I apologize but I don't know the difference. I have been able to find very limited references on nikko's and the ones I do don't have this kind of engraving. I figure its custom because it says custom on it and the gold crown but can't find any others to compare to. Even searchs on nikko on here didn't turn up much. It's a pretty gun though.

I'd contact Chris Scholler(sp?)w/Eagle Trading; formerly in Grass Valley, Ca., an advertiser here & probably the best guy for an honest assessment of your friend's Nikko.
FWIW, I'd rate it about the same as a diamond grade 101, value wise, but minus a hundred for not being marked 'Winchester'. Just my opinion, since you asked. The market here is fickle to off brand names & Nikko unfortunately qualifies. Your friend's side plated gun has some nice features like the trigger guard treatment for a right handed shooter. And too, it speaks loudly to how Olin/Winchester got shafted on the wood selection at the time of their joint venture. Its a very nicely executed gun, yet dif from the Grand European Winchesters of that era. It helps to like 101's. I do [the early one's w/the small dia. wrist that made a 12 feel like a 20 FN Super], but many do not.

Nice gun. Never seen one that high grade. Most Nikko doubles sell for $600-$900. Your gun would definitely bring more but I couldn't say how much more as I'v never seen anything like it.

Looks like a Nikko Grandee - I've seen a few in Japan - not the exact same engraving but the sidelocks I've seen are Grandee's - sometimes Grandee is engraved on it. Not sure of the value - but definitely higher than $900.

Sideplates, not sidelocks, I think
