I made a promise to myself that when I retired from the Army that I would finally have one deer season to do nothing but hunt. So far I have been blessed with the opportunity to harvest four nice does for the freezer this year. The first two I harvested with my bow. September 24th, 2012 September 25th, 2012 October 29th, 2012 These two were taken with a custom built .280 Ackley that my father built for me when I was in Iraq in 2005. These were the first two deer harvested with this rifle. The one on the left was shot at 150yds and the one on the right at 185yds.

Some pics of the gun your Dad built for you would be nice. A little history behind it maybe? That has to be one special gun for you.

Nice Chris! I wish I had the time to hunt deer. But I have a hard time NOT quail hunting instead!!!! I guess I'll just carry some buckshot with me this quail season. We often jump deer while quail hunting. Even had a dog point a bedded-down cow-horn spike once.
Was this at Benning?

Here are a few pics of the rifle. The barrel was done by Harry McGowen. He has barreled several actions for my father over the years and does excellent work. I currently have three rifles with his barrels on them. This .280 Ackley and a matched pair of .257 Ackleys, all three of which were built by my father. This .280 Ackley has a set and a hair trigger, butter knife bolt handle and a steel grip cap with my initials monogramed in it. The floor plate and trigger guard were engraved by Ken Hurst. My father built custom rifles for years both before I was born and for several years after. He told me if I wanted another one, that I needed to figure out what I wanted before he was too old to build one. We were originally planning to go on an elk hunt together after I returned from Iraq and just haven't found a time that worked for both of us.

That is one beautiful rifle Pre-13. Now take the time, make the time, to go on that elk hunt with your Dad. If you heed my words of advice I guarantee you won't regret it. I'll never forget my last deer hunt with my Dad. Dad was 78 at the time. I'm glad that he got his deer even though I didn't. The situation was such that it is one of my fondest hunting memories.
