I have been reading "In the Heart of Africa" by Baker and have questions on the rifles he took with him. The book is a reprint of the original so I am not sure if anything was left out on the reprint. I know a little about the H&H cannon he carried shooting a 1/2 pound projectial using 12 drams of powder. He also mentioned four other guns he took with him three doubles, a #10 Tatham, #10 Reilly, #10 Ceylon and a Fletcher. The trek was started in 1861 approx so I assume the guns were muzzle loaders. Would the #10 de-note 10 bore? and would they be rifled or smoothbore?. Does anyone have information on other books that might cover these guns?
I have a great interest in reading about the early attempts to explore Africa and the men that were involved. He mentions using them but not much other details.

The Rifle and Hound in Ceylon is a good book of his which mentions his guns. He did indeed use muzzle loaders and I think that they were 10 bore rifles. I had a copy of the book but sold it recently. There is a dramatic piece where he had run out of bullets and quickly loaded the rifle with Annas and shot a charging water buffalo with it. Lagopus.....

Jerry V Lape,
The anna is a siver coin about the size of a dime. Saved from a charging buffalo by loading and firing a charge of coins is illustrated by a woodcut in Sir Samuel Bakers book,The Rifle and Hound in Ceylon.

The MythBusters show did a segment a couple of years back loading dimes in a shotgun shell and firing at a hog carcass with little effect. They also seemed to debunk the rocksalt myth unless yo are about 5 ft or so from your target.

I sold the book recently but seem to recall he did not kill the animal but stunned it allowing time to get away. Lagopus.....
