I have recently acquired a Cape gun with what I believe is an unusual caliber on the rifle side. The shotgun side barrel is stamped 16.0 choke and the rifle side is stamped 6.76. I used a micrometer at the business end on the rifle barrel and I get 6.7mm. The shotgun measures 15.8mm. My question is, can I get ammunition for this rifle/ shotgun? And any history on the item would be interesting as well. Detailed pictures can be seen here: http://hutch2.tonidoid.com/app/websharepro/share/capegun/Regards, Hutch

Hello Hutch, This is an Austrian made gun from Ferlach, nitro proofed in 1932. Shot barrel is 16g for the short 2.5" shell, rifle cartridge is probably 6.5x58R (S&S) or maybe 6.5x70R; a simple chamber cast (using a candle) will tell you the exact cartridge. In any case this ammo cannot be store bought but can be ordered from a specialist, or handloaded.
With kind regards, Jani

Unusual scope mounting, to my mind...is it tight? Good luck with loading up fresh ammo. I hope it shoots well. STeve

Not much that is more interesting to work with than an obscure rifle chambering.

It experienced preliminary proof in Ferlach in 1931 and was completed in 1932 as Jani notes. A chamber cast would be best but the length of the chamber might narrow the field. 6.5X48R, 6.5X58R, 6.5X65R & 6.5X70R are just a few. For a wild guess, I'd choose the 6.5X70R, as that seemed to be an Austrian favorite and then there's the 6.5X65R S&S. Is the Sirius scope a Modell G? I believe the mounts are see thru Austrian. I don't think the 6 surmounted by the tilde to pair with the 6.7mm. Also the stamp of the "C"s back to back is common on tubesets.
Kind Regards,

Thanks to all of you for interesting responses. I will purchase some Cerrosafe from Brownell and make a casting of the chamber. When I get home today I will also thake a few more pics of the scope and scope mounting and post to my cloud ( link http://hutch2.tonidoid.com/app/websharepro/share/capegun/ ) Scope mounting is very secure and easy to remove.

As stated above, a chamber cast is necessary to determine the nominal caliber.I believe, however, that some of the above listed calibers can ba eliminated from consideration. The 6.5x65R is too recent to be considered. The 6.5x70R is a very slim (about 25-20 head dia.)cartridge used in small, light guns, and this BF has a 16 ga barrel next to the rifle barrel;the dimensions just do not demand such a slim caliber. The 6.5x58R is a good possibility,6.5x48R less so(due to utility). Two other good possibilities are 6.5x57R and 6.5x54(53)R Mannlicher. A good way to narrow the choices, absent chambercast,is by slugging the barrel. The 6.5x48/58/70R cartridges usually have a groove diameter of .260-.262";6.5x57/65R,usually .264-.266"; and 6.5x54(53)R is sometimes.267-268". The American Ford, I thought that the 6.5X65R(Sauer) had 1910 roots and was offered till the mid 1930s. But we all await the chamber cast dims.

Raimey, I'm always eager to learn of new cartridges. The one I'm speaking of is 6.5x65R or 6.5x65R RWS from 1988-1990.These are based on .468-.473"head dia. case. What is the head size of the 6.5x65R Sauer you are talking about? Another possibility would be 6.5x61R,but it's not too common(6.5x70R is really uncommon). I'm looking forward to the chambercast. Ford, the rim is given as 0.520" and the base is given as 0.435" based on the 0.360" BPE.
