They are a smooth bore. Bores, also look in excellent shape.

Smoothbore muzzleloading fowlers are used quite a lot with lead round balls. Patch them and load them the same as a rifle. Some guys prefer no patch at all and swear by their smoothbore's accuracy.
But I did read the post too quickly. I'm so used to associating .490 balls with .50 calibre weapons I misspoke. The bores measuring .490 would be on a par with a 39 - 40 gauge.

Those pistols are absolutely beautiful. Just about everything I've seen from Williams & Powell has been top shelf and yours go right along with the best. Don't try to chase down the records. Whatever existed was incinerated by the Luftwaffe, according to the current owner. View down Castle street looking towards city hall about 1875. Williams & Powell would be near the far end of the block. Pretty high class address. An early ad for Williams & Powell mentioning Ann Patrick:
John McCain is my war hero.

I'm just thinking about what their use would be?

Very common configuration for the 1830s or 1840s. As for the date of manufacture I lean towards the later 40s or early 50s due to the style of engraving.

Truly Beautiful pistols. I'm surprised Raimey hasn't commented on them yet! Jim
