Oh.....did Pope barrels taper tighter in dimension toward the muzzle. That would explain your good results. Most of thes Palma barrels taper from .308 to .3075.

Gary,
I'm sure that the Palma bullets came from you....Thanks...I've been saving them for this rifle. Most Pope rifles have a bit of choke in them but I have not measured this one.
The twist rate is 1-14". It looks good now but the test will come at 100-200 yards. This barrel was made in November, 1921. I don't remember how long it is but will go measure it as it's in the vise soaking with No.9. It's 25" long.
I have a really good 30-caliber mould that works well in this rifle so I'll most likley shoot more lead than metal. But first I need to see the target better.

I was able to learn of the original owner of this rifle because Pope stamped his name along with his normal information on the underside of the barrel.

I managed to get in a few hours of trigger time in this morning. Alvin Linden 1903 NM, with a Weaver 330 scope which I dislike, a lot. If this rifle did not have some history I would have removed it years ago. Hard to believe that this was the scope they used on 1903-A4 sniper rifles. I fired two five-shot groups, fired the first then gave it a little elevation.

I drug several of my old military conversions using the military stock like the Krag with me today. Anyone who has some time with a peep sight knows how the sun can move the bullets around ;-)...fired number 9-10 just as the sun broke out of the clouds. After it left I fired two more to make sure.

I am still working on this one. Wood finish in progress and metal finishes to go. Once I had filed in the bolt handle I could finally shoot it. .257 Rem Factory 117gr ammunition. First round is low left, 2nd is low right and then a three shot group.
