The gun and extra barrel came in a canvas case and it is tired. I don't trust it to carry the gun around in. Did these older american guns come cased? I assume not. Should I try to find a two barrel case to fit it? or should I get another Leg-o-Mutton type like it has. I would like to keep the extra barrel with it.

I plan on bringing it to a gunsmith to have it checked out. Any recomendations on someone close to Mass. I have one recomendation but I am looking for others. If everything checks out I plan on shooting this gun so I have to have the stock lengthened. What kind of time frame for this operation? I am not famous for my patience

A very nice case (in its day) but if it is in the same condition as the one that came with my Grandfathers Winchester takedown Model '94 I would bet it is not good for regular use.

Mine is marked 'Winchester' but suspect it was made for them as I have two others that are nearly identical that do not have the 'Winchester' name on them.

That is very cool with the sleeve for the second barrel set.

You can search or Ebay (where I found my other two) but it is a crapshoot. One was in ok shape the other was no better than my original. There are people who specialize in renovating these cases but I don't know of anybody to recommend.

BTW - As I understand it that is not a 'leg o mutton' case as those are hard sided cases. A Google search should find you pictures of a true 'leg o mutton' case.

VERY nice gun and case, lucky you. How much longer you need to go? Connecticut Shotgun has 1 1/2" thick red recoil pads. I've used about four of them and like them. If it's a little too thick and the 1" is not enough, the thick one can be cut on a band saw to what you want. Paul

Vern Brinkerhoff Lincoln, CA 916-408-0663 specializes in repair of trunk style cases but might be able to help you out.

You might check with one of these gentlemen for gunsmithing:
Mitch Schultz Ct. 203-254-0436
Andy's Custom Shop in New York http://www.andyscustomshop.net/
Abe Chaber 40 Fairmount, Danbury, Ct. 203-748-1830

And re: "I am not famous for my patience..."
You'll need to be. Master smiths move in another dimension of space and time but the wait will be worth it.

You must learn to have patience, when it comes to having work done on older SxS's. :-)

One thing that double gun guys learn if they are at it long enough is that "long enough" is a relative term. Also, it is a lot easier to gain a half inch with a lace on Brauer Brothers pad from Brownell than it is to send a gun to a high dollar gunsmith to do a poor job installing an ugly 1 1/2 inch Galazan pad that will lower the value of the gun by hundreds of dollars. Almost all of my shooting guns wear slip on pads while they are being shot, which is about a thousandth of a percent of their lifetimes.

Eightbore- I am going with the slip on pad- good call. I wont be able to wait months to shoot it. Where can I find a lace up pad? I only see the velcro ones around. Link to Brownell?

Thanks,
Paul

Google Brownell, the pad is about $12 each. It comes in various sizes. I use all sizes for whatever gun. They look like they were made in 1935 and cost about an eighth of what a Galco pad costs.

I found the lace up pad on Brownell, but it is out of stock. Figures.
