Michael, with that scope, is the theory that you have a 6:00 hold at the bottom edge of the paper plate? Or do you put the bottom edge of the post right in the center of the plate? I ask because partly I've never been able to get my head around the whole 6:00 hold thing, and partly because I grew up with rifles with crosshair scopes which are self explanatory. My thought was always, "how far down is 6:00?" What if the target is large but you still want to hit the center? It never made sense to me and I always held dead center, even now with my scopes that have reticles similar to the one above. With peep sights I hold dead center also.

Thanks for the scope link!

The idea with a 6 o'clock hold is the bullet impact is adjusted to hit right at the top of the post or bead, be it a reticle or front sight. Covering the target with a bead seems anathema to me, but that's me.

Calls to mind the heated arguments between the old Schuetzen masters over which was better- the pin head front sight or the aperture front sight.

My opinion only....I always have the black of the 10 rings set right on top of the blade front sight which has the correct width to match the perceived width of the 10 ring at distance. You can do the same with a pinhead to form a perfect figure 8. For "target" scope I zero so the 10 ring sets right into the upper right quadrant formed by the crosshairs. Never want the sighting device to hide the target.
However, hunting scopes are zeroed onto the center of the intended target.

It seems I need to make up a rule for each different rifle. With that big flat post I held six o'clock on the red dot in the center, which is not easy to see by the way that 100 yards. I like a pointed post much better.

Most rifles have a round bead front sight and I like to center them in the middle of the white plate. My eyes are not what they once were so I use what works for me.

Bottom line is each person has to find what works best for them.

I also took my .400-Niedner to the range. The .400-Niedner is like the .400-Newton which uses the Newton family of cases. You can run a 300gr bullet at around 2750fps. I was using a lighter load, more like the .400-Whelen which was 60gr of 3031 and a 300gr Hornady.

I fired three at 50-yards to see where they were going.

I moved the sight a little, fired one, moved the sight a lot, fired one and moved it back about half. The third one hit the red sticker and I wimped-out and put the thing away grin

I use the 6 o'clock hold shooting in the military matches. I like to have a bit of white showing between the target and post from sights due to changing light conditions.
I struggle with red targets as in red dots or the red Schuetzen targets although lately I have added filters on the rear aperture sights to gain a little more clarity. Benching that .400 could tend to wear on a guy after awhile!!!!!!! smile
Reminds me of a .375/.338 Mauser I had....tough to hang with it more than five shots from the bench.... it would cloverleaf if you were man enough.
