Hello David.

I have seen this done with skeleton grip caps, but not with buttplates.
Inlet a piece of wood to fit the opening from the inside and have it overlap inside the bottom of the plate.
The wood is going to be thin so epoxy the hidden areas to the plate for strength, arrest any cracking, etc.
Inlet the stock so that the entire unit fits like a solid butplate.
If the skeleton is radiused on the inside, the insert should be invisible from the sides of the plate.
That should work well enough.
The only part of the insert that would be unsupported would be the through hole. This shouldn't be a problem as the rest of it is supported by the stock beneath it..

Should have read closer, Toby, um, said that.
Tom

This 10 minute Chapuis Arms video shows how they do their skeleton buttplates and grip caps on thru bolt stocks. I think its towards the end, but its fun to sit thru the first 9 minutes.

Hopefully this will expand on Toby's explaination.

I taken two photos of the butt of my Wesson rifle. This rifle has two 7/8" holes drilled in it (similar to a draw bolt hole). The reason for the holes is to install two recoil reducers to help with the recoil and to bring the gun up to the maximum weight under the rules that it will be shot under.

I haven't finished making the insert yet but I think everyone ccan see how it works.
