And of course you folks are correct and I'm all wet with a red face. No SG swivels and the checkering is obviously not Win's. I still think it's worth every penny of the starting bid and even more. After all, the traps and scope setup are worth quite a bit, by themselves.

The front sight indicates an early production date so the accuracy may have suffered over the years.(?) But still, speaking as a user as well as an aficionado, if I wuz still young I'd be proud to hunt with such a prize as well as proud to possess it.

Mount IMO is European and it was definitely NOT installed by G&H. And if I had built it then it woould have a low bolt handle and low scope mounting position. But I still like it.
Regards, Joe

I like it too, and would buy it if it were available and close to home. Anyone have a clue about the mount? Not that it matters.

I asked the seller for additional pictures when it was up for auction, looking through them, I can see the markings on the mount. It is a very early G&H marked

I don't have near the knowledge of the early custom makers that Michael does........but I believe he knows, or has a good idea who stocked this.

The checkering is very good. Lots of coverage, and the diamonds are nicely spaced and cut well. The points have nice vertical lines throughout. That's good spacing. It's also a pretty good stick of wood.

A couple things puzzle me........it's a G&H side mount, but as Joe alluded to, the mounting isn't the quality of G&H. The raceway on a G&H mount is smooth and almost undetectable. And that's typically pinned and screwed. There also isn't any special treatment of the ejection port.

The grip shape reminds me of Seymour Griffin, but I'm not familiar with that comb nose treatment.

Trap grips and butts were relatively expensive options even back then........and these appear to be quite nicely done. I wish there were more pictures of the entire rifle....including the cheek piece, butt plate checkering, top of wrist checkering pattern, etc.

I couldn't put a realistic price on it, but I might go out on a limb and put at least triple of where it was listed.

I think you guys are working it out just fine and the answer is out there.

If anyone is wondering...The rifle has been sold.

And I presume you will post pictures of your new rifle when it arrives?

AS it happens, a friend bought it but we should have pictures one day.

IMO there were no bids on this one because of the poor pictures, no overall pictures of the rifle and none that showed the cheekpiece.

The model 54 was made by R.G.(Bob) Owen.

Might have gotten there eventually, but I don't see a lot of 54's, nor a lot of Owen's work. This Owen Mauser seems to be from that same era, however, and compares favorably to the 54.

I thought the quality workmanship and wood were obvious, but more and better pictures certainly would have helped the auction.
