I saw this the other week, it was mislabeled so it could have gone easily unnoticed, but I thought the members here might enjoy looking at it. Winchester 54 and I have to say that I admire the job done in finishing this stock 1903

IMO someone missed a good buy on the 54 and someone else got a good buy on the 1903.

What did you like about the 54 Joe? Just for fun nothing serious, anyone? What would be a fair price for the rifle?

Michael, I liked the fact that it was a Super Grade, in a VERY usable and popular chambering, with a fairly nice period scope and Lyman 48. Reasonably clean, with no 'issues', most of the bells & whistles, no obvious inconsistencies, IMO should be worth ~$1000 to a person who likes Winchesters.
No, it doesn't have the M70's trigger, safety and bottom metal, but the accuracy and reliabilty are just as good as in the later rifles and I consider the scope to be a desirable upgrade.
But, you gotta remember that my first consideration is the actual 'huntability' of any rifle. I don't care how many embellishments it has if it doesn't seem to be actually usable in the field or capable of excellent accuracy.
I remember Col Whelen's comments on his M54 270 (or at least I think I remember, grin). He liked it and so do I.

I have to agree with Joe re: the desirability of this one. But I fear the overall condition would keep it away from ~$1000. $750 seemed in line. (But then again I have a soft spot for M54s.)

I doubt the 54 is a factory Super Grade, more likely a nice restock. I wish we could see better pictures of the traps. Is the 1903 an NRA sporter?

The trueguns site is certainly PROUD of their stuff! Not too long ago I sold an almost identical 1893 Marlin in 30-30 for $1250, had bought it at a local show for $650. Same tang sight, same excellent condition, same same except for caliber, 1896 production date with factory letter. IMO, judging by the price differential of the Marlins and my admittedly vague and amateurish opinion of the rest of their prices, I don't choose to deal with them.
Nice stuff though, too bad I just can't afford it!

Regards, Joe I do not believe that rifle has a factory stock. It looks like a good custom stockmaker had his hand in this; maybe G&H???
