Michael, I liked the fact that it was a Super Grade, in a VERY usable and popular chambering, with a fairly nice period scope and Lyman 48. Reasonably clean, with no 'issues', most of the bells & whistles, no obvious inconsistencies, IMO should be worth ~$1000 to a person who likes Winchesters.
No, it doesn't have the M70's trigger, safety and bottom metal, but the accuracy and reliabilty are just as good as in the later rifles and I consider the scope to be a desirable upgrade.
But, you gotta remember that my first consideration is the actual 'huntability' of any rifle. I don't care how many embellishments it has if it doesn't seem to be actually usable in the field or capable of excellent accuracy.
I remember Col Whelen's comments on his M54 270 (or at least I think I remember, grin). He liked it and so do I.
