Hi Alvin:

Thanks for the help!

I thought that the set screw was to be used for adjusting the tension on the saftey. What else could it be used for on this saftey.

Timney did send me, at no charge, replacement parts for their saftey. I did lose the set screw so I will have to adjust the spring tension by fitting a longer spring into the hole in the saftey. As things appear now, the saftey works like it should.

Stay well,

Franchi

When my late father gave me his 1935 SG M54 .220 Swift (26" stainless barrel and Stith scoped) I used a Maynard P. Beuhler safety conversion, just as your detailing on the K98 Mauser- the exception being the different orientation of the paddle wing from the Mauser as to the M54-and early series M70 as to SAFe and FIRE positions-- it did require a bit of honing, the ball detent spring loaded is positive and has worked fine all these years- I also replaced the trigger with a Timney, and, like Buehler, they are "top drawer" gun part people- like Hornady, products made by serious shooters for serious shooting customers.

I also replace the G&H side mount with the higher ring set for the Stith, set up for my dad to allow clearance for the paddle wing safety-drilled and tapped the rear receiver ring and it now wears a Leupold Vari-X111 Varmint scope in Buehler 2 pc. ring base mounts--all steel, no aluminum whatever.

Thousands of handloads set for 3800 fps- No barrel or chamber erosion whatever-the prairie "dawgs' in SD and NE tremble when I uncase that old Winchester-

Hi RWF:

Good grief man! I read with interest your posts concerning shotguns on another site. We get around.

I have a SG m70 Winchester .220 Swift. Mine was mfg. 1936 despite it not being released until 1937. My gun has a serial number of 4XXX.

I thought that the M54 was not chambered in Swift! I thought that the M70 and the Swift all were announced in 1937 as the new hot item!

At a weak moment, I re barreled and restocked my Swift to make it an ultimate varmint rig.

When the gun was a stock hunting gun, I took many deer and varmints with it. All deer were killed with on shot.

I will not brag about the long shots and great kills that I made with the Swift, but it is a calibre that every rifleman should use in his life time!

My favourite load was a stiff load of 4064 with a 55 grain Nosler bullet for deer and a 55 grain Sierra bullet for varmints. M.V. was 3900 fps with this load. I did win the biggest buck contest one year by using the 63 grain Sierra bullet.

Stay well my friend,

Franchi

Jim Kobe et.al.

Where would I get one of these safties. The last time that I saw a M70 type of saftey for the Mauser, it cost about $400.00 plus what it cost to hae it fitted! A bit steep for this 99% person! Lol

Stay well,

Franchi

These are original Mauser 98 Bolt shrouds that I machine to take the WIsner levers. They are not three position, only two, forward and back. In the rearward position they lock the bolt closed. I sell them for $130 with your old shroud in trade.
