Send them a bore slug and LBT (Lead Bullet Technologies) will make you any size lead or lead alloy bullet you want, sized exactly to your bore. Probably best to shoot lead out of that old bore, anyway. And this way, you'll have the lube grooves. JMHO Steve

There is a mold ordered from Accurate Molds. Working on the reloading dies. Lead was all I ever intended to shoot, over black powder. Oh, I ordered a case of that too. Grafs had a special on Scheutzen, which I have been shooting the last two cases I ordered. I'm down to about 16 lbs and that ain't much for me.

Way nice, another powder junkie.

Cheers!

If you can find someone who can cobble together a bump die that could be your trick (aside from paper patching). I made one but haven't tested the slugs as of yet. It took a .357 to .367 and in the case of the lube grooves they stay intact. It was able to do the same with jacketed bullets as well.
Just another way to approach the problem.

I just found a drilling that may be in the same chambering as yours so I will certainly be looking back to your post when I approach mine.

Looking forward to your results.

Tom

Welp, finally everything has arrived that is needed to make the gun go bang. I've already learned that 10 rounds of brass is not enough. I cast up about 40 bullets, weighed them and threw out about 10 that were not within a 1 grain window. I don't know if it's necessary to keep them that close but I did. First target out of the gate loaded with 60 grs. of GOEX Ctg., Federal 215 primers and lubed with an approximately 50/50 mix of olive oil and beeswax did not do well....at all. It looked more like a shotgun pattern than a rifle group. Next load with Scheutzen Ffg and Federal 215 primers, same lube, was quite a bit better. Group was about 4 inches. Ok...back to the bench. Same powder charge and lube with a change to Remington primers and I had 4 of the five shots in 2 1/8 in. 1st shot was a flyer but I didn't call it....I don't think it was me as I was shooting off a rest and that cartridge has very mild recoil. I had cleaned the bore after shooting the first 5 rounds loaded with GOEX and I believe that had something to do with it as the next 4 printed in the group menitoned. I haven't taken any pics but I will when I have more time.

The Ch4D dies worked great just to neck size the case. Expander button and case mouth bell were just about perfect for the bullet at .416. I drop tubed the powder into the case, one card wad over the powder and seated the bullet with one lube groove exposed, compressing the powder about 1/8th. The chamber has a rather long throat and the bullet was seated just off the lands. The bullet is a mold from Accurate Molds and is Tom's 40-82 bullet opened up to throw the .416 size which weighs 270 gr. from a 1-25 alloy.

Next up I'm going to try Scheutzen Fffg. The bullet on target at 50 yards is about 4 inches above center and I'm hoping a little faster powder might bring it down. Shooting will tell.

My 16 bore brass hulls arrived yesterday and I'll be in the market for a round ball mold.....horse manure...I measured the inside of the case and made a casting of the bore and can't remember the measurements. Seems an assortment of the hulls were .695-.705 and the bore was...crap, I'll just go measure it. It's .675. This castin sure looks strange with all that straight rifling on it....

Soo...do I need a .675 RB?

This afternoon I just took the time to take a few pictures after I fired a couple groups. I duplicated the 60 grs. of Ffg Scheutzen load then loaded 5 more where the only thing I changed was the powder charge to 61 grs. of Fffg Scheutzen. I fired both groups on the same target in 4 round groups. I had to save the 5th round to play on my 100 yard steel buffalo target. I numbered the shots as I fired them as to sequence, location and powder type and charge. The Ffg Scheutzen threw a flyer to the 6 ring at about 12:00 o'clock and it was the 2nd round. The first round from a clean barrel was a good shot. On the line between the 8 and 9 ring at about 11:30. Here's the 4 shot group with the Ffg load

Next up was the Fffg load of 61 grs. Scheutzen. I think I like this load. 4 shots into 2 1/8 in. and the center of the group about an inch high at 50 yards. I'll need to adjust the front sight a bit to bring the group to center and I should just about be there. Here's the Fffg group

I don't know if I can get it much better unless I would go to Hawk jacketed bullets, something I really don't want to do. My old eyes can't see much better than this anyway. Next is to shoot it at 100 yards and see what happens. i'm a little trepidiitous about that. More about embarrassing myself than what the rifle is capable of...lol!

Here's the old beast itself.

Thank you gentlemen. This has been a lot of fun. Now to go to work on the 16 bore side.

Sharps4590,

Very nice indeed. It has been fun watching you bring your treasure back to life. Be sure to post pictures of any fallen prey once you get a chance to take it afield.

Regards,

Buchseman
