I've always been more of an O/U fan but after increasing exposure to English doubles I'm really starting to get interested in them. Problem is I know nothing about them at all.
My question is what are some of the better-made English doubles for not a lot of money (specifically in the $1500-1800 range).
I've seen quite a few guns in this range on various dealer sites, but the brand names mean absolutely nothing to me.
I realize that for this price I'm getting a pretty spartan gun, but that's OK, I just want to dip my toes, don't want to nosedive just yet.
Any suggestions for a good cheap, light, well-balanced English double?

I've got a couple at the upper end of that price range, a Cogswell and Harrison and a Charles Osborne, both tight 12 gauge boxlocks in good condition. Send me an email and I'll pass on the information to you. kinglarr@knology.net

If you're looking for a decent shooter and don't mind a sleeved gun (like mine) there are some decent Cogswell & Harrisons in that price range.

All makers, with the posible exception of Boss, sold a wide variety of models. The Brits made no substandard guns. Their cheapest models, boxlock non-ejectors intended for farmers or colonists, were still robust shooters. SOoooo, abandon the idea of using the maker's name as indicator of quality. Learn how to asses the individual gun's Original Quality grade and its Current Condition level. Brand Value level, original Quality grade, and Current Condition level taken as together will give a good indication of market value.
In your case, I recommend you look for a less well known maker (BV3), a boxlock non-ejector, and as much current condition as you can afford. My market model suggests that for BV3, you can get a BLNE with 1/3 engraving coverage and a little bit of wood figure (OQ7) in slightly used (CC2) to significently used (CC3) for $1600 - $2000. If you can add a little bit more cash and want ejectors, look at (specifically) Webley & Scott Model 700's. They are relatively modern and pretty much "bullet proof." There is a fairly wide selection of weights and barrel lengths; short barrels will command a discount.

30" barrels are a must, for an English gun!
Check-out Thad Scott Fine Guns, he has a mess of 'em.

Look at Hill Rod and Gun. They have English, Italian and don't forget the German guns. They might be the best value of all.

This is a good subject.
Reasonably priced English guns for those of us who get cold chills spending more than a few thousand.
My comfort level may be just a little higher than Prairierat's. So, if one were willing to spend say 2500 to 3 grand (or a smidge more) for a double. What would one look for and where would one look? Regards, Jake
