Joe, I use a barrel rest but no longer a muzzle-rest. I have a hard flat front sand bag (brick bag). I put the barrel on the bag and slide the rifle forward until the forend just touches the bag. I do this for every shot to make sure that the rifle is in the same position each and every time.

I feel more comfortable with my cheek touching the stock with a little downward pressure. I cannot do this the same way each time so I have off shots with the barrel in a sled or resting out near the muzzle.

PS: This applies to single-shot rifles using lead bullets. Rifles like my Borchardt shooting .25-HP work best off the forearm.
