Hello all,
I'll shortly be putting an old 10 bore back into occasional service; am I right in thinking that a 13/16" wad punch (.812") would be best for wads in a nominal .775 bore? I find that 3/4" works a treat in the nominal .729" 12 bore (with actual bore diameters +/- as much as .015"ish, so .020"-.040"ish seems a good differential).
I've also got a 28 bore, and have found a nominal 9/16 / 14mm just a tad too small for the bore; I wonder if going up to 15mm would be too big; how much bigger can I go without getting to big (and too tight) for the bore?
Thoughts?
Thanks.

Cadet;
My experience with the older type wads, though primarily with 12 & 20 ga's, was that the normal wads measured about 1 ga sze larger for 12ga & more for the 20ga, in ga size, but slightly less by measurement. Thus a 12ga wad would actually measure about an 11ga (.751"). On this basis a 10ga wad would go 9ga size (.803").
Thw wad of course wants to be a good tght seal in the bore, but must load easily in the shell without swelling it enough to cause hard chambering.
Without having actually tried these sizes I would "Speculate" the .812" (+.037") is about max for the 10ga with paper/plastic hulls & the 15mm (+.0405 @.5905") is most likely over the limit on the 28ga. Something on the order of 14˝mm (.570" @ +.020")) would seem more reasonable here to me.

When I load for BP I use one gauge larger for the OS and filler wads. I go two gauges for the over powder wad. But I'm useing a Mec press so it's not too hard to do. Just one gauge larger would probably work for all the wads. I just like a tight seal. Paul

cadet, if you have trouble getting useful wads, let me know. I may be able to make something to help or write you a spec to have something made. I use a Lyman Orange Crusher press with the 7/8-14 bushing removed and a home made die (1 1/4-10 bolt) to punch out 12 ga top wads from cereal boxes (gotta love them Cheerios to keep yourself in top wads!).

Thanks for your help, men.

Rocketman, is your press mounted wad punching arrangement similar to what Buffalo arms sells? They look really neat and efficient, but far less fun than belting stuff with a mallet!

I'm glad your wads come from something as tasty and happy sounding as cheerios. I've found a perfect source of a hard, solid, strong cardboard about 3/32" here... the snag is that they come from our army issued ration pack cartons!

cadet, similar concept, but differing design. I'll post a photo for you.
