What's the significance of the stars next to our names?
Regards, Joe

It is a relative measure of how many people think you are good versus evil...

You just click on a user name, Select profile from the pop up menu, then look for the little dialog box and you can vote a person as many stars as you want. I just voted 5 stars for you smile Of course it didn't change your average enough to bump you up to the next level of "cool kids".

So this is like an anonymous peer review?

I'm afraid you wouldn't want to hear my opinion of most so-called 'peer' reviews.

But now at least I know the significance and can vote my opinions, albeit anonymously. The anonymous part will be a big change for me, most of the time my opinions have been expressed (trumpeted?) in what some have called an obnoxious and overly-abrasive manner (grin).

Maybe the star system will keep me out of trouble, we can always hope...
Regards, Joe

Shouldn't we have some negative measure, too? So you could go from "Boxlock" to "Boxcutter" for some particularly terroristic offense? Rocks (maybe asteroids) instead of stars???? Just sayin'...what goes up should also be able to go down.

Actually I hadn't noticed the stars before and intend to un-notice them and just read the posts. Judge not.....

Well, Joe, You might be surprised to know that I tend to agree with your view of 'peer' reviews. But try and find a better system - not so easy. As a former editor, grant panelist and a few other instances where peer (let's drop the mocking quotes this time) review is the meat of the system, alternatives really really suck.

I don't much care for anonymity either. That's why I use my real name here and professionally. It does cost me rather dearly, professionally and otherwise, but I'm happier for it nonetheless. You don't have be anonymous here with your stars either. I just told Gary he gets 5 from me. Shout it to the world if you want.

Mike, I agree - rocks would be good. But like you, I think stars are way way overrated. Then again, I don't have many do I? Guess I'm not a cool kid.

Joe: Howdy Friend! It should also be noted, that sadly they are also used by some people in need of a spinal transplant, to punish those who they do not agree with in our discussions. I have twice been "BUSTED DOWN" from 4 stars to 2 because I had the temerity to stand up to a group of "GRAND POOBAHS" and their "RAH RAH CLUB" in discussions here, disagreeing and then being savagely attacked at the ankles by their pep squad. As I said then, I WOULD ONLY CONTRIBUTE TO HELP PEOPLE SUCH AS THE GENTS HAVING LEGAL TROUBLE GETTING THEIR REFUND FROM THE CHECKERING TOOL CONCERN IN MASS. OR TO ASK FELLOW BLOGGERS QUESTIONS. I NO LONGER JOIN IN GROUP DISCUSSIONS AND NO LONGER POST PICTURES. EVEN THOUGH ONE OF A RIFLE OF MINE WAS POSTED BY A RESIDENT EXPERT HERE, IN RESPONSE TO A QUESTION WITHOUT MY PERMISSION! Although he attempts to copyright all his [or at least he thinks he does!] It all reminds me of the story of EX. GOV. MARVIN GRIFFIN of GEORGIA: When asked how he lost an election he was favored to win, he responded: " They ate my BAR B QUE, they just didn't vote for me!" Talk to you soon Joe, Thanks for everything you do, it is much appreciated! GOD BLESS! Jerry

One of my main problems with peer reviews is the relative quality of the peers/reviewers and the yardsticks used to rate them as peers in the first place.

I once considered joining the local craftsmen's society, mainly because it was suggested to me as being A Good Thing To Do. However when I inspected some of their work and found that these clownscraftspeople would be 'evaluating' my own work for at least 3 years before allowing me to become a full member, I politely declined.

In related news, I personally know of at least one national magazine whose editor uses SpellCheck as his only proofread. A peer? OF WHOM? Any tenth-grader knows better than that!
OK, enough of my soapbox, regards, Joe
