I have had one on my Hunting double for 25 years and it still
pliable and looks good.(looks like Pigskin)

As to the stretching of leather for forming it over a recoil pad, use a mixture of 50/50 water/alcohol. Inexpensive medical alcohol, which is called "rubbing alcohol" in America, I believe.
Allow the leather to soak in this mixture for five minutes.
