David is willing to do 80 yd pattern testing with a 32" LRWF using a 3" 1 3/8 oz. lead 4s load. Could anyone suggest an appropriate (and available) powder/formula that might reproduce the original SuperX?
Or have some pre-steel shot 1 3/8 oz. loads lying around the duck boat that he could use?

I regularly pass-shoot pigeons at 120 yards with my .410. I have to use 6s though as 7-1/2s run out of velocity at 100 yards. Lead is two yellow school buses.

Not sure what the original progressive powder was. A couple which were pretty early on the scene was DuPont Oval & Hercules Herco. A 1950 Lyman reloaders guide lists 37 grains Herco with 1 3/8oz shot as Max DE, shell length no stated. Another Lyman's from later in the 50's gives 38 gr Herco as a 4DE-1 3/8oz load for 3" shells.
These were of course for paper cases with card & filler wadding. Likely for the premium Super-X loads felt was used for the filler rather than fiber.
Oval may have already been discontinued by 1950 as no loads are listed for it in a Lyman 1951 manual & the 1950 one only shows it for 1Ľoz loads.
Perhaps someone can come up with more positive data.
PS; These loads were in 12ga, "NOT" the 3" .410.

He probably could if he'd let them get far enough out for the pattern to spread to an effictive dia. You know them .410s "Shoot Like a Rifle".

Mike I'll buy this> I once saw a video where some fat Limey was dropping crows and ravens at close to 140 yards with a 12 gauge. They had a range finder so I am sure it was legit- Interesting form of crow shooting (one of my passions)- and I also love pass shooting waterfowl (but NOT when the area school buses are moving on the rural roads that boarder the river I haunt in Nov)--However- long range tight choked shotguns, in the right hands, can bring down birds at long ranges-- Now as to the Limey- recalling the late Nash Buckingham's story "The Dove" he relates where a Limey with his Bestes London made double was invited to a Southern dove shoot- limit of 25 birds- and was placed on a windy hill, with the traditional Limey arse-resting shooting stick and 100 shells- he ran out of ammo and had 18 dead doves- Try May-Jumne dense foilage- the hawk attacking nesting birds call on a Johnny Stewart electronic caller, CQC with a full choke shotgun-- entirely different ball (or cricket old chap) game indeed..

Foxy - Is it possible for you to describe someone without attempting to degrade them? The "Fat Limey" you are referencing is George Digweed - probably the finest clay target shooter in the world, having won something like 14 world championships in various clay bird sports. BTW, he shoots a 34" P gun.

Someone a while back posted a link to YouTube. On it was George Digwood shooting for a record distance at a thrown clay target. He started at some outrageous distance and kept going back. I believe he stopped at 120 yards. Incredible. Another link showed him shooting crows, some out to 80 yards, he made it look easy.
