Speaking of projects...

I picked up a #400,000-range Rock Island Bubba Special for the 'to do list'. Do these receivers pose a problem for engravers?

If that's a Double Heat Treated receiver (High Number?), they can be still very tough to cut. Some more than others.

Kind of like trying to engrave a Colt SAA frame w/o annealing it first. It can be done, but the results aren't usually as nice as you'd want.

The double heat treat retains a case hardened surface, though not as hard and deep as the Low Number receivers.

Low Number receivers if original condition are like a glass rock.
If you get a L/N that you can cut (or file) it,,chances are it's been annealed somewhere along the line IMHO.
Wether that makes it more or less shootable is unkn.
The shootability of the original is the forever unanswered question it seems.

But I like to shoot my Sedgley L/N Sporter....

The data I have shows that Rock Island receivers were double heat treated beginning with #285507, nickel steel at #319921. The list shows that Rock Island production did not reach 400000 ??

I learn something every day, and a lot of times it's that what I learned the day before was wrong

I've heard this issue addressed before. If I recall correctly
a number of receivers were manufactured and marked at the Rock Island Arsenal but were completed later, I think at the Springfield Armory. Perhaps another member will be along to confirm this.

Yes, that's what I'm led to believe too, and one of the reasons I snagged it. The barrel date (meaningless, I know) is 1928.

Search the archives here for a more than thorough - yawn - discussion on the subject with light shed not necessarily found elsewhere.

Like the DuBiel despite the buggered screws, electric pencil, and customized mag follower, I just don't know how those didn't lower the price more...

Here is another rifle that has been on my watch list, I wonder how many of you have seen it as well and what you thought of it.

This is one that was on mine for a while, but it rolled over at $450, failing to make its reserve. I was out at half that. smile

This one has been on my watch list. Looks good but have no idea who the maker is.
