John Marr, born 11-6-1813 in Benshausen near Gera. Died 5-12-1921 in Milwaukee. Engraver and Sculptor. Apprenticed in Zella as a gun engraver. Came to the US in 1852 and worked for Colt doing pistols. In 1855 he moved to Milwaukee in partnership with Danish born Peter L Mossin. He later went into business with George Richards. His older son, Carl became a painter in Munich. His second son Louis became an engraver in St Paul.

Marr and Richards produced, wood, metal, zinc,half-tone engravings, photo engraving, seal engraving, steel stamps, relief line, brass signs and electrotyping. They did business in Wis, IL, MN and the Pacific Coast. In the early 1890's they were doing $30,000 a year in business.

Today they are best known for the maps they engraved.
