Amen, Rocketman. We're competing in a global market, against millions of people who'd gladly do what we do for a fraction of the cost. If we're to maintain our prosperity, we have to work smarter, and we have to work together. Pitting labor against management or vice versa is a sure road to disaster.

A government-management-labor TEAM is a powerful tool. But, it is a team only as long as nobody gets greedy. The off-shore guys (OSG) have computers in their plants. That means internet access. That means they know what we get paid. They want "prosperity" in 5 - 10 years, not 2 - 3 generations as in times past. OSG will not remain low cost labor long. However, the new plant is there and they have the upside on the learning curve for new jobs. We are on the downside for old jobs. We were very fast in moving old plants/building new ones and we will have learned even more about plant moves in 5 more years. Transportation costs are going up. Off-shore manufacture depends on transportation of goods.
Yep, the next 10 years is going to be very interesting for macro-economics.

Luckly in dealing with the "Oldest Union on the West Coast" we had one thing in our favor. That is we would say, Let's just go fishing!' and the negotiations would usually be over. I guess why we did not have labor - boss problems is that in fishing we worked on the share system and if you did not pay fair you did not get crew (or had problems, interesting stories) I would say about 90% of the boats are extremely fair or honest and 98% now days are safe to work on. Lowell, sure we had to watch our $ but we always ate equally. It seemed that the only time some one got shorted was when the cannery did not pay, even then the crew is protected by law.
I'd suggest trying a new business but watching your pennies but not the time u put into it. I think while I was working up in the Fishing business for years I never made over $.50 an hour. I guess it was the love of catching fish and doing well at it some of the time. It would be the same for a hobby becoming a business. You'll probably not get wealthy but with enough work per day you will be happy and well fed. jas
Currently own two Morgan cars. Starting on Black Powder hunting to advoid the mob of riflemen.
