So my son is over in Scotland and I told him to visit a gun shop and see what a common man paid for a used gun. I was curious as all the guns I see manufactured in Scotland seem to be very pricey? Well it seems ther are no gun shops and the common man does not own a gun there. Seems you only have a gun with with special permit for hunting or farming. Learn something new every day. Bill

I was in Dickson and McNaughtons Edinborough store about six years ago. A lot of clothes for sale and tiny little gun closet. But they did have a few very nice guns.

In Scotland (like all of the UK) you need a Shotgun certificate to own a shotgun. This requires both a little 'effort' and a modest cost to get and needs renewing every 5 years. Therefore generally ownership is confined to those who really want/need to own a shotgun.
Most major towns have good shops including Edinburgh, Inverness, and Blairgowrie (those being places I can recall visiting gun shops).
Prices in Scotland will not differ much from elsewhere in the UK with the usual 'UK available' range of new and second hand guns available. At the 'high end' one might expect to see a few more local 'best' guns such as Dickson etc.

hello billgrill,
re your statement "no gunshops and the common man does not own a gun there".this is totally false and im afraid you have been misinformed.i understand per head of population there are more firearms held in scotland than elsewhere in the uk.there is also a varied selection of gunshops throughout the country at prices usually just below the uk average.there are large numbers of common men taking part in all aspects of fieldsports.
cheers
mrwmartin

I belive that I've harvested more deer in Scotland than in the US. The roe deer is a great little deer to stalk.

I lived and worked in Scotland for 15 years and I can tell you that there are many excellent gunshops scattered around the country and most house holds outside of the cities have a gun and fishing rod easily to hand. Also many a bargain to be had and some really unusual guns turn up.
