Since I am new to collecting and shooting SxS shotguns i have to ask. Now dont laugh but What will it do if you shoot with a bore that has light pitting,or moderate or heavy? Does this cause more pressure or just make the gun less accurate? and since I can borrow a micrometer what is the min barrel thickness for a 10gauge LeFever? I am amazed at the amount of knowlege on this forum. I have read to page 90 and learn something new on every page.

If a bore pit reduces the wall thickness sufficiently, it can lead to a rupture on firing. Bore pits are hard to measure accurately. Light pitting usually isn't a problem, but don't hesitate to call in an expert when in doubt. Pits shouldn't have any dramatic effect on shotgun "accuracy;" pattern "quality" or placement.

Currently, there is no good way to fix pits. Ain't that the pits!!! cry

ok, that makes sense. Is there a guide of what the min wall thickness should be on the diff gauges? or is it a rule of thumb like no more that .010 from factory specs?

My experience is that pits in a larger bore like 12ga guns have little effect other than making it harder to clean the bore. However, I do know that I have had poor patterns from a pitted bore .410. I think it's an issue of shot damage with the little .410 where more percentage of shot is in contact with the bore vs. larger bores. But I could be wrong.

I think a pit would have to be really deep to cause barrel failure. I had a .410 with an extremely deep pit on the outside of the barrel underneath the forend. .410 pressure's for 3" shells normally run around 11,000psi and if any shotgun barrel should have failed due to pitting I would have thought it would have been mine, but it never did even after I'd fired 100's of shells through it.

Well, that is kinda of a tough question; there is not even a good rule of thumb. We see plenty of ported guns that "prove" that a hole or even a series of holes in a shotgun barrel don't necessarily lead to failure. Pressure guns had holes drilled and tapped in the chamber area and didn't blow. So, it probably is going to take a severely damaged barrel to literally blow, but, fingers and innocent bystanders being involved, if in doubt, consult a pro.

well thats somewhat of a relief. My LeFever has some very small pin prink pits on the outside of the barrells but very few on the inside. These pits are VERY small and you have to look just right to see them. I would guess .002-.003 deep. I have talked to keith and he didnt sound very concered just said we needed to measure the barrels to make sure. I'm pretty sure that the barrels have never been touched so I should be ok. My J.P. Clabrough might even be ok.
