I was aware of how the rear base "locked" the ring but had never given a thought to an objective bell not allowing the scope to pivot. Thanks to both of you for that little tidbit that will no doubt save some angst!!!!!! Thanks to a member on this board we're hot on the trail of a set of rings.

Yesterday I took my flint Jaeger out for some "rock killin'" and surprisngly the sights were quite clear with my glasses. I didn't shoot too bad!!!.....something I'm grateful for at the youthful age of 59!!!

I just remembered I do have a few pictures of my Drilling. They were stashed away in photobucket and I forgot about them. Not many or very good but here it is.

sharps4590,

Thanks for posting the pictures of your drilling. Just curious, what is the rifle cartridge?

7 X 57R..and I have a good load worked up for it!!! It took a bit to get a load that would shoot to the sights but I finally found one.

Nice cartridge. I should have asked earlier; have you had the opportunity to take it out hunting?

I've had it for....goodness, close to 15 years if not more. I took it bear hunting up in Maine back in the mid-90's, didn't score, and have shot a lot of crows with it and a few coyotes, feral cats and feral dogs that so loved to kill my calves. Back in the 80's and 90's I kept a pack of beagles and killed a few rabbits with it. I bought it back then because we were ranching and I always carried some kind of firearm with me when checking cows and fences, rifle, handgun and rarely a shotgun. Inevitibly whatever I had with me was wrong for the range or the vermin I needed to kill so I came to the conclusion that a Drilling would answer my needs quite well. It did. I'm confident I was the only farmer/rancher in mid-Missouri who checked his livestock and fences while carrying a drilling...lol. Most carried a 22LR or 30-30 and some a 12 bore pump gun.

sharps4590,

That's great stuff. It sounds like your drilling has been a hunting companion of yours for quite some time. I have some friends in the Hannibal and Monroe City area that have said they didn't know such guns existed until they met me; and here not so far away was a neighbor walking his fence lines with an old drilling, nice.

I don't know about elsewhere but can attest that around here I get a lot of "what is it" questions & peculiar looks when I haul out my drilling. I can't tell you how many times my German double in 43 Mauser has been called "a neat old .410 double barrel" followed by the exclamation "that's a rifle?!". My Reilley in 500 BPE is often accused of being a 28 bore....and no one to this day has figured out the Jones underlever or the similar forearm release on the German double until I show it to them. Don't bother mentioning a Vierling or Cape Gun...all you'll get is dumb looks and a "huh?". Actually kinda fun....lol!

sharps4590,

Sounds like you have been confusing the neighbors for years, I'm sure it's a kick. A lot of folks that I run into think they're really neat once they learn more about them. One of Dietrich Apel's wishes when he formed the GGCA was to have members educate others to help preserve the traditions and history of German gun making, a.k.a. "The Cause". Great job!

Have you by chance posted pictures of your .43 Mauser on the double rifle thread? I'd like to see it. I picked up a rather nice hammer Sauer a year ago but haven't got around to shooting it as yet.

I think I do Buscheman. I'll dig through and post it over there under "German Double". What caliber is your Sauer?
