Personally, I've questioned the idea of art on a gunstock, but I've always been in favor of nekkid ladies...Geo

I don't know what he's talking about. Every English gun case I have has covers on some of the compartments, albeit some more than others.

The stock and barrel are all open in every case, no covers for those. But there are covers on the compartments for the added goodies, being wads, powder/shot flasks, turnscrews, etc.

I've always assumed that if one compartment doesn't have a cover (other than the stock and barrel)it must have somehow gotten lost or broken along the way. We're talking about cases well over 100 years old, after all.

The only difference from the HUEY case is that none of mine have the little round brass "handles". Is THAT what the guy is referring to? Anyway, the HUEY case for the H & H does look very nice.

I think you're cases are the exception to the rule, Kid. Regardless of age, the many, many cases I've seen, rarely have covered compartments, and except for some terribly high-end Purdey and H&H guns, I've never seen a covered case that's come straight from the maker. As others have mentioned, it's more a 'french thing', than English.

Either way, I like it, and I'm thinking of heading down the path of putting a scene on the cover, like Mr. Larson. Now, I don't have the artistic ability to draw a stick man, but I'm already thinking maybe some Sporting Classic covers or something would work.

Hammer, I slipped up - The covers DO have those little brass handles on the covers.

Most of my cases are for English BP percussion guns and rifles. The Purdey 16 bore shotgun actually has one cover that's wood and goes the length of the width on the end (dja follow that?). It covers wads and loading materials. The rest are green felt.

I was wondering if you have to go back farther in time - This Purdey, for instance is from 1860. But then I checked my William Evans from the 1890's and it has 2 compartments covered. Red felt and brass doo-dad knobs.

I can't be the only guy here who has English cases with compartment covers! C'mon everybody, 'fess up!

I've seen cases both ways. If there is a little ridge or shelf around the compartment, chances are there was some kind of cover.

In fact, my earlier cases do seem to tend to have been more likely to have had a cover but this is only a small sample so I don't know.

I prefer lids because I like to use the cases without everything going everywhere. Very few cases still fit so well that this is true without a lid.

But, the typical English case I have seen intends the lid of the overall case to be the lid for each compartment as well. In these the dividing walls extend well up the case interior.
