hello daryl,
i post this only as a point of interest. i have always known woodward style fences to be described "arcaded".they do look appealing on woodwards and some others.

Mr. Martin, of course I forgot that one. It is probably the most common term I hear. Hallowell offers a pretty good description and pictures of arcaded/castellated fences here--- http://www.hallowellco.com/arcaded_fences.htm

Here is a shot from a 1911 Hollis, Bentley, and Playfair catalog. The catalog has many illustrations of guns that they will make for the Trade. They illustrate the Leaf Fence , the Chased Fence, and the Claw Fence which is pictured below.

what a fabulous hollis photo,claw fences,scroll back action and engraving i have never seen on boxlocks from that era.i particulary enjoyed the dog head on the trigger guard.a manchester maker,griffiths,often had a setter on the trigger guards of his guns and i always enjoy seeing them.

would be interesting to hear some more info re armstrong glasgow,it does look a lovely gun. the only armstrong i am familiar with is from newcastle,england.

Dig, did you mean the Armstrong of Glasgow was the one pictured in the Hollis Bentley and Playfair catalog ? I have often wondered who HB&P made guns for. Must have been many since Bentley and Playfair were in that business since about the mid 1800s, I guess. I saw an interesting Bradell [sp?] from Ireland once, that we could tie in to the Bentley and Playfair source. I would guess we often credit Scott and Webley and Scott as a source, when there are clues that another might have done the work.

Bentley & Playfair also made boxlocks for Rigby.

Thanks Daryl: I knew about arcaded fences; had a Woodward for a while and they're one of the most distinctive and elegant features I've seen on a sporting gun; I've seen Greeners with smaller ones, too; I was thrown when you talked about the "barrel lumps" - I understand the lumps to be the bits which mate the barrels to the action; the balls or fences to be the bits which contain the pins at the rear of the breech.

hello all,(correction)
in a recent post above by myself,i said some guns by griffith carried a setter on trigger guard.by coincidence i have noticed a griffith boxlock in current holts on line catalogue and the description says pointer on trigger guard.i therefore apologise if was wrong.(the engraving is usually rather naive)
