If the original post asked for experiences of game birds out of season:

Currently away from home at the pointy end of Australian foreign policy... Not so very long ago at all, I and some mates were tasked with a job somewhere remote and quite open. As I returned from a short trip to the bushes (there weren't many amenities...) I got a pleasant surprise when something burst with a whirring of wings from under my feet: quail of some description, but I'm not sure what sort. I spent some very pleasant hours watching them and some sort of pretty little doves/pigeons; I was glad to have a really good binocular with me to watch them, and I've now ordered a handbook on birds of the region. The other blokes think I'm a bit odd...

Gregg, "snipe" was the broad, collective term used to describe all shorebirds back when they were legally hunted. Wilson Snipe which are legally hunted today don't decoy. Here's a limit from last month. The gun is a 1957 Ithaca M37 20 gauge.

One of these years, Gil, we are going to trade some time in the Maine grouse woods and in the Georgia snipe swamps. Using 16s, of course.

Word of caution, guys: Always read the state hunting regs carefully when hunting either woodcock or snipe (rail too). Some states (like Iowa) require a state migratory bird stamp to hunt woodcock. Some also require nontoxic shot for shore birds like snipe and rail, although I don't know of any that require nontox for woodcock.

Sounds like a great idea. Gil
